Just in time for college football season — and less importantly, classes — a new Midtown tower chockfull of "ultra-modern student apartments" has opened for Georgia Tech pupils with discerning taste. And while he's probably paying the rent, these University House apartments are not your daddy's dorms. Gone are the musty communal showers, beaten-down kitchens and deplorable furnishings of higher-education past. The roughly 700 Tech students to nab a bed here will enjoy sparkling city views, vintage arcade games, multiple lounges and a resort-style pool with a freakin' Jumbotron. Like other new student residences around Atlanta, the project aims to capture demand for off-campus, upscale living. Is it a flunk-out factory in the making, or a case of smart kids finally getting what's rightfully theirs? Only time will tell.
University House at the corner of Spring and 8th streets is the newest dorm-style residency for Georgia Tech students, featuring "rockstar amenities" and "the very best in off-campus freedom," officials say.
Pool views of Midtown and downtown, including another student-housing tower to open this semester, Square on Fifth (at right), which is touted as "Where the Players Play" and "25 Floors of Awesome." We sense a tower rivalry coming on.
As of Tuesday, only one unit at University House had not been rented for the building's debut semester — a four-bedroom with 1,340 square feet. Information on rental rates wasn't available.
The outside courtyard and pool with city views at University House. It also features a 16 by 9 — that's in feet — Jumbotron television. It's like the Jerry World of pools.
A habitat that breeds responsibility and commitment to academics.

Where residents will sweat out what happened at the pool the night before.
Located 20 stories up, the Sky Lounge features a birds-eye view of the city with stylish places to sit and relax, watch television or — when all else fails — do some studying.
The upper level of the community room features arcade games, console games with large-screen televisions and a view of the outdoor courtyard and pool.
Even the breezeway has televisions, a pool table, ping-pong table and places to lounge outside.
The Sky Lounge's appropriate color scheme.
The University House community room features a multi-entertainment setup with five televisions, places to lounge and sit, a game room and access to the pool area and gym.
The Genius Lounge features private workrooms to study by oneself or in small to medium groups up to 11 people. In theory, this is where academic eligibility will happen.
No garage-sale couches or beer-box sculptures here. Rents include furnished living rooms with tables, couches and televisions.
Apartments are flush with granite and stainless steel.
Apartments feature all furnishings for the bedrooms, too, including the bed, desk and chair. All that's missing: sheets and towels. Each bedroom in the building has its own bathroom as well.
The 19-story tower has 268 total apartments.
